Ron Perlman says 'Drive' co-star Ryan Gosling should have had Oscar love in 2010

TORONTO - Movie critics aren't the only ones fawning over Ryan Gosling these days — he's also got a fan in "Drive" co-star Ron Perlman.
The "Sons of Anarchy" star thinks Gosling should have received Oscar love for his role in "Blue Valentine" last year.
"I just think 'Blue Valentine' was maybe the most under-appreciated, phenomenal performance in the last 10 years," Perlman said Thursday in a telephone interview to promote the upcoming DVD release of "The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption."
"The fact that he didn't get nominated, I want to say finally, publicly, was a real blemish on the part of voting members of the Academy because to me, that's what acting is supposed to look like."
Perlman plays a crime lord who clashes with Gosling's enigmatic character in "Drive," which was up for the Palme d'Or award at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
He called Gosling's performance in the film "stupendous" and said it was a pleasure to work with the heart-throb.
"It's a double treat working with Ryan because first of all, my admiration for him as an artist and his ability to bring very, very interesting aspects of humanity into play with a great facility is immeasurable," Perlman said from New York.
"But the great thing was getting to know him and getting to work alongside him, he's just such a regular dude.
"I mean, he doesn't have any ego that is discernable, he loves working in the movie business, and so most of what you get out of him is enthusiasm and excitement and kind of a boyish, very kind of pure-hearted way and that's a delight."
Gosling, who was up for an Oscar for his role in 2006's "Half Nelson," has had another remarkable year with an acclaimed performance in "Drive" and recent Golden Globe nominations for "The Ides of March" and "Crazy, Stupid, Love."
Time magazine also recently named the Ontario native its Coolest Person of the Year and fans have made him the subject of gushing websites such as "Is Ryan Gosling cuter than a puppy?"
"The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption" comes out on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download on Jan. 10.
